I initially employed Lynne Moten as a school’s inaugural K-12 Director of Service Learning before engaging her as a consultant at two other educational settings. My experience, based on Lynne’s work, is that service learning, done well, is a gamechanger in terms of the depth of a school’s culture and the quality of the education offered. To have the fundamentals of Lynne’s work and experience now captured in this publication is a gift to education and to any school leader.
Belinda Provis, former principal

Lynne Moten is the consummate professional. We often hear the phrase ‘walk the talk’. In the area of service learning and immersion experiences, Lynne has done and continues to ‘walk the talk’. Lynne writes from a place of vast practical on-the-ground experience backed up by a thought-through and personally owned values system. Lynne’s approach is constantly people-centred, and she is constantly about the culture of Encounter that Pope Francis often referenced. Lynne’s reflections are highly practical and are a great ‘guide’ for the practitioner setting out into this area of professional expertise for the first time, or a reference point for the more experienced practitioner. Lynne deeply desires a more just and better world for all, and this comes through on every page of her reflections.
Br Damien Price PhD (Service Learning), cfc, coordinator, Encounter the Heart Ministries

Drawing on decades of experience, Lynne has written an insightful and practical guide to authentic service learning and cross-cultural immersion. In an era when schools are often tempted to do a little bit of everything, Lynne offers a refreshing invitation to slow down and invest deeply in relationships, solidarity and shared learning. Her approach is thoughtful, practical and deeply human. This book is an important contribution to contemporary school practice in service learning and cross-cultural engagement.
Richard Mavros, deputy principal, Mission and Identity, CBC Fremantle

Schools are not just places we want to teach curriculum; rather, we want to teach humanity, empathy and responsibility. This book honours that mission. Lynne Moten draws on decades of authentic service learning to show us what deep, transformative education can look like. Her insights remind us that real learning happens in relationship – in community, in discomfort, in curiosity and in genuine encounter. This is a courageous, compassionate and necessary guide for any educator who wants their students to understand not just the world, but their place in it.
